Memorial Day 2017: Double Sports Day in Pittsburgh

Monday, May 29, 2017. The City of Pittsburgh had two of its franchises playing home games on the same day. Obviously, the city’s main sporting focus was on the Penguin game at PPG Paints Arena. As mentioned previously, it was Game 1 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final with the Nashville Predators. The NHL’s official YouTube channel described the series in a highlight video as a matchup with two teams of contrasting Stanley Cup Final experience. According to an article from WJAC Johnstown, the Pens won 5-3 even though they kept the Predators’ Finnish goaltender Pekka Rinne fairly non-busy. Penguin rookie winger Jake Guentzel (USA) scored the winning goal of a game that was more exciting than expected. However, a spectator disrupted the game by throwing a catfish onto the ice. Across the Allegheny River, the Pirates played the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park. The Buccos went on to win the game 4-3 in nine innings. TribLIVE writer Rob Biertempfel reports that Andrew McCutchen broke the 3-3 deadlock with a walk-off in the ninth frame. That way, extra innings were not required. This rounds out Pittsburgh’s dual-sport Memorial Day 2017.

Pittsburgh had a pair of exciting games on Memorial Day 2017. Both the Pirates and Penguins won, even though the respective games were not played simultaneously.
