At the tournament, the United States ranked first in its preliminary group. The land of Stars and Stripes recorded its only preliminary loss to co-host Germany, followed by wins over Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Latvia, Slovakia, and Russian Federation. Sadly, the U.S. was eliminated by Finland in the quarterfinal round.
Shortly after the Penguins eliminated the Washington Capitals, several of the latter club’s players joined their respective national teams. Goaltender Philipp Grubauer suited up for Germany, while skaters Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov joined the Russian Federation squad. Finally, Swedish center Nicklas Bäckström donned one of international hockey’s most famous jerseys.
In the gold medal game, Sweden took two-time defending champion Canada into a shootout. The Maple Leaf country, unfortunately, lost to the Swedes.
